CDC – Guideline for Disinfection and Sterilization in Healthcare Facilities

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends moist heat in the form of saturated steam under pressure as the most widely used and most dependable for sterilization. Steam sterilization is nontoxic, inexpensive, rapidly microbicidal, sporicidal, and rapidly heats and penetrates fabrics.

Healthcare Associated Infections

According the CDC, on any given day, about one in 25 hospital patients has at least one HAI. A CDC survey described the burden of HAIs in U.S. hospitals, and reported that, in 2011, there were an estimated 722,000 HAIs in U.S. acute care hospitals and about 75,000 patients with HAIs died during their hospitalizations.

HAIs are expensive for healthcare facilities. The average length of stay with an infection due to medical care was 24 days and resulted in a cost of $52,096.
